157 + numerous blank pages, several filled out with manuscript recipes. Pictorial green cloth. First Edition. Boston: D. Lothrop, [1884].
Marion Harland was a much-beloved and admired cooking instructor from Boston, who wrote numerous guides for new and not-so-new cooks living in the later part of the 19th century. This copy was owned by Laura Belle Carter of Santa Rosa, CA, who (aside from practicing her and others' signatures on several blank pages) added a number of her own manuscript recipes to the blank pages at rear. Her recipes include vinegar candy, strawberry shortcake, doughnuts, dried apple cake, etc.
Small spots and rings to covers, rubbing to extremities, else good.
